Sometimes a rare opportunity comes along in this industry to meet a hero. 91 year
old Les Munro from Tauranga, New Zealand, is truely that. He is the last surving
pilot from the famous 1943 Dam Busters attack. Les was a Squadron Leader in
617 SQN, flying the mighty Lancaster bomber. He probably survived that night because
he lost his communications over Holland when the aircraft was struck by enemy
ground fire (flak). He managed to turn around and return to base. Many of
his mates never had that chance and didn't return at all. Les went on to fly almost
60 sorties through to 1944 including the D-Day landings and the first raids
on U-Boat and E-Boat pens. He lead the new and successful 'precision bombing'
sorties as opposed to the standard 'area bombing'. We were filming with UK presenter James Holland (2nd from right) and sound recordest Nick Tracy (green shirt). Thank you Les, for making a stand for freedom. |
